There was no way Penn State would respond to pedophilia by shutting down its unspeakably repulsive football program.
Neither should the gluttonous NCAA nor the clueless Big 10 be expected to do the right thing by suspending Penn State from all athletic competion until it cleans up its act. Given the response to endemic pedophilia by other powerful institutions, that appears to be a long shot. Stone-walling has worked very well.
So once again, money has triumphed. Today's game went on as though it was played in the Colosseum of ancient Rome in front of 100,000 wretchedly ebullient partisans. Panting at the salacity Penn State unexpectedly provided, ESPN likely drew an inflated number of viewers, which means inflated advertising rates. Listen to the jingle of the falling cash. The Big 10 and NCAA hungrily await their cuts.
For network TV, which forms this country's social mores, Penn State vs Nebraska is merely business as usual.
For the U.S. audience, which slavishly follows the TV piper, the question is: has human decency really sunk this low?
